Planning a trip to Tanzania? Whether you're coming for a classic wildlife safari, beach escape, or Kilimanjaro climb, being informed will ensure a smooth, safe, and memorable journey
1. Visa & Entry Requirements
Plan ahead to ensure smooth entry into Tanzania.
Most visitors will need a tourist visa. You can apply through the following options:
- Visa on Arrival – Available at JRO, DAR, and major borders. Preferably paid in USD.
- Online e-Visa – Recommended. Apply through: Tanzania Immigration Portal
- Embassy/Consulate – Apply in person in your country.
Entry Requirements:
- Passport valid at least 6 months beyond entry
- Minimum of 2 blank visa pages
Visa Fees:
- $50 USD for most nationalities (single entry)
- $100 USD for U.S. citizens (multiple entry)
Note: No additional visa is needed for Zanzibar if entering from mainland Tanzania, but carry your passport for ferry or domestic flights.
2. Referral Visa Requirements
Certain nationalities must obtain special pre-approval. They cannot get a visa on arrival and must apply 8 weeks in advance.
Countries requiring referral visa include:
Afghanistan, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, and others. See full list at: Referral Visa Cases
Important:
- Approval must come from the Commissioner General of Immigration
- Documents like hotel booking or tour invitation letter may be required
- Don’t book flights until approved
