1. Visa & Entry Requirements

Plan ahead to ensure smooth entry into Tanzania.

Most visitors will need a tourist visa. You can apply through the following options:

  • Visa on Arrival – Available at JRO, DAR, and major borders. Preferably paid in USD.
  • Online e-Visa – Recommended. Apply through: Tanzania Immigration Portal
  • Embassy/Consulate – Apply in person in your country.

Entry Requirements:

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond entry
  • Minimum of 2 blank visa pages

Visa Fees:

  • $50 USD for most nationalities (single entry)
  • $100 USD for U.S. citizens (multiple entry)
Note: No additional visa is needed for Zanzibar if entering from mainland Tanzania, but carry your passport for ferry or domestic flights.

2. Referral Visa Requirements

Certain nationalities must obtain special pre-approval. They cannot get a visa on arrival and must apply 8 weeks in advance.

Countries requiring referral visa include:

Afghanistan, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, and others. See full list at: Referral Visa Cases

Important:
  • Approval must come from the Commissioner General of Immigration
  • Documents like hotel booking or tour invitation letter may be required
  • Don’t book flights until approved
