Wildlife Experiences & Tree-Climbing Lions

The tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania are famous for habitually lounging in acacia and sycamore trees, a rare behavior for lions. They climb to escape the heat, avoid stinging tsetse flies, and gain a vantage point to spot prey like impalas from heights of 5-6 meters. While lions elsewhere rarely climb trees, the pride in Lake Manyara makes this a regular, learned behavior. Experts believe this behavior is driven by the need to escape the heat of the savannah floor and avoid flies. They are mostly seen in sprawling acacia and sycamore trees. The best time to see this behavior is during the dry season (June to October) when the ground is hotter, often in the afternoon.
